401 | Elizabeth Hunter was born in Kincardine Twp, Bruce Cty, Ontario to Ann and Murdoch Hunter on May 7th 1859. She appears with her parents in the 1871 and 1881 censuses there. She met and married her husband, Murdoch McLeod, while living in the same area. Shortly after marrying, the young couple relocated to Wasco County, Oregon (Obit) where Murdoch's brothers, Alex and George were already farming. Here they took up homesteading on a farm on the Tygh Ridge and raised their 7 children.Elizabeth's brother, William also moved to the area about 1888 and her mother, Ann, came to reside with Murdoch and Betsy the last few years of her life. The family appears in the 1910 census living in Kingsley village but by the 1920 census they were living in The Dalles and by 1930 the census for The Dalles shows Betsy as a widow living with her daughter Olive and grand daughter Janet whose mother had died. Murdoch's will shows Betsy as being age 65 when he passed away in 1924.Elizabeth had become known as 'Betsy' to some of her relatives and friends. She also kept in touch with her Canadian and NZ family as witnessed by a number of photos. Her cousin, R. D. Finlayson, who visited San Francisco in 1957 was in possession of several photos of Betsy although it is not believed that he visited The Dalles. He could have obtained them when he made contact with Betsy's daughter, Myrtle, while in San Francisco. Elizabeth was a member of First Methodist chirch in The Dalles, Old Wasco County Pioneer assoc and the Columbia Chapter 33 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She passed away at the age of 96. Services were at Smith Callaway Chapel with Rev Revelle Roach officiating. Vault internment in the IOOF cemetery. | Hunter, Elizabeth (I4392)

404 | Emigrated in 1774 from Ireland to Ballstown, Albany County, New York, USA MILITARY SERVICE: 1779 NY Jessup's Rangers- corporalMILITARY DISCHARGE: 1783 New York, NYLAND GRANT: Bef 13 Oct 1784 Edwardsburg Twp., Grenville Co., UCHEIGHT: 5' 8"David Hunter Sr. of South Gower Twp. has been mistaken for David Hunter Sr. of Yonge Twp. since the 1790's. Not only descendants, genealogists and U.E. Loyalists groups, but also government official during their lifetimes made this error. Both men were U.E. Loyalists with large families. Both had sons named James, David Jr., and John/Jonathan. And both had daughters named Elizabeth, nicknamed Betsy. Both were probably married twice. However a 1797 map of Edwardsburgh Twp., clearly shows the 1st David Hunter Sr. living in that township on 100 acres near his in-laws the McIlmoyls. A similarly dated map of Yonge Twp. shows the 2nd David Hunter Sr. on 200 acres on the St. Lawrence River.Other differences between these 2 men- South Gower Twp. was a farmer, whereas Yonge Twp. was a millwright. The first man was born in Ireland in 1761. The 2nd man's birth place/date is unknown. Before the American Revolution the 1st man lived in New York State and the 2nd lived in Vermont. South Gower died at a young age in the fall 1816 according to his brother-in-law Thomas McIlmoyl. Surrogate Court records from that time support this date.David Hunter Sr of Yonge Twp lived until old age and died c. 1833. His signature on many post 1816 documents support the 2 man theory. To illustrate the make-up of the 1st man's family there exists an 1810 Township Census for South Gower. Listing the names and ages of all citizens individually it reads:vDavid Hunter 47,Gette Hunter 27,SamÕl Hunter 18,Jane Hunter 14,David Hunter Jun'r 11,Mary Hunter 8,James Hunter 6,John Hunter 4,Peter Hunter 2,Elizabeth Hunter 0As well, Thomas McIlmoyl submitted to the Surveyor General a signed affadavit in 1831 which attests to the lineage of the 1st David Hunter Sr.'s offspring. It reads: Grandfather's name was Samuel, he died at New York, in the time of the revolution.Samuel,Jane,David,Mary,James,Peter,Elizabeth,John,Nelson,Frances,Margrat (sic) | Hunter, David (I3247)

406 | Emigrated to Argentina c 1903.I don't know why or exactly when my grandfather went to Argentina, but it was said that he introduced merino sheep to Patagonia. He had an estancia of about 300,000 acres, with 60 gauchos, and flew the Union Jack from his flagpole. All "gone with the wind" a long time ago. 2 of his brothers and one of his sisters also went to the Argentine.- ex Ronnie Land, 8 Apr 2005 | Sadleir, Robert Hunt (I7903)

Laid down in 1913 at Barclay, Curle & Co. of Glasgow, she was intended for the Hamburg America Line. World War I intervened, however, and while on the stocks she was purchased by Canadian Pacific. After being launched as Minnedosa in 1917, she was towed to Harland & Wolff in Belfast for the installation of her engines and fitting out as a troop carrier. She entered service with a 5 December 1918 maiden voyage from Liverpool to St. John, New Brunswick, her passengers being Canadian troops returning home. When her trooping duties were completed, Minnedosa was placed on Canadian Pacific's regular service from Liverpool to Canada, and remained in that service until 1922. She then moved over to the line's Antwerp-Southampton-Canada route. Minnedosa was refitted and modernized in 1925 at Hawthorne, Leslie & Co. of Newcastle. She then returned to service from Antwerp to Canada. She returned to the Liverpool-Canada service in 1927 and (after 129 transatlantic roundtrips) was laid up in 1931. The ship was sold for scrapping in Genoa in 1935, but was bought from the breakers by the Italian government, renamed Piemonte and used as a troop transport in Italy's Abyssinian campaign. In 1938, she was placed on Lloyd Triestino's Far East service. Piemonte survived a torpedo attack near Messina in November 1942, but not an airborne Allied bombing attack, at Messina, in May 1943. She capsized and sank, half submerged in shallow water. Raised in 1949, she was then towed to Spezia for scrapping.
