- Margaret McIlmoyl's ancestral tree
You would undoubtedly need a road map and a professional guide to successfully chart your way through 90-year-old Margaret McIlmoyl's ancestry. This personal family history runs parallel with Saanich's own history, so what better time to unravel the family story than in Saanich's centennial year, the year that her mother, Margaret Louise (Munro) McIlmoyl, turned 90. Margaret was born in Rose Lynn, Alberta, on the 24th June, 1916, to Alexander William Creighton Munro and Ethel Winifred (Simpson) Munro.Margaret was home-schooled in Alberta until 1927, at which time the family moved back to Saanich. She then attended Strawberry Vale School and the former Saanich high school (which later became Tolmie School and is now the Victoria School Board offices on Boleskine.) She also attended Victoria College in the days when it was housed in Craigdarroch Castle, and later entered nursing training at St. Joseph's School of Nursing from where she graduated in 1937. Soon after that she met Charles Gilbert (Gil) McIlmoyl and they were married in 1940.He was the grandson of former MLA James T. McIlmoyl and Mary Ann Simpson, a daughter of Henry Simpson.Yes, the Simpsons were now back in the family mix!Margaret and Gil were very distant cousins. One particularly interesting job Margaret herself first took in 1956 was as camp nurse at Sunshine Camp in Saseenos on Kaltasin Road. And now Margaret herself, who turned 90 in Saanich's centennial year, is proud to be able to say that Saanich pioneer blood runs through her veins.
