Arthur Jory and father James Jory Arthur is standing next to a model he built of a mine shaft timber work and the pumping and winding arrangement. The pump rod is clearly visible, the top of which would have been attached to the nose of the beam engine. This model demonstrates the timber shafting, the pump rod, the pump at the base. For general information on early mine pumps, engines, and operations, see the Wikipedia article. | ||

Sara's Shaft - Wheal Kitty, Cornwall, England This picture was taken just prior to the Bob being thrown off its stool and smashing into the cylinder below. A sad day as the engine was good but the price of tin was low and mines were closing all around. The fellow in the lower right with the arm in the sling is Arthur Jory. What he didn't know about mining could be written on a pin head with a felt tip. He appears in some of the South Crofty pictures replacing a beam that had broken and fallen into the top of the shaft. The photo's are 1926... This image was copied from Roy Morton's photo archive on aditnow.co.uk. Please visit Roy's collection at aditnow.co.uk |
