- Elizabeth Hunter was born in Kincardine Twp, Bruce Cty, Ontario to Ann and Murdoch Hunter on May 7th 1859. She appears with her parents in the 1871 and 1881 censuses there.
She met and married her husband, Murdoch McLeod, while living in the same area. Shortly after marrying, the young couple relocated to Wasco County, Oregon (Obit) where Murdoch's brothers, Alex and George were already farming. Here they took up homesteading on a farm on the Tygh Ridge and raised their 7 children.Elizabeth's brother, William also moved to the area about 1888 and her mother, Ann, came to reside with Murdoch and Betsy the last few years of her life. The family appears in the 1910 census living in Kingsley village but by the 1920 census they were living in The Dalles and by 1930 the census for The Dalles shows Betsy as a widow living with her daughter Olive and grand daughter Janet whose mother had died. Murdoch's will shows Betsy as being age 65 when he passed away in 1924.Elizabeth had become known as 'Betsy' to some of her relatives and friends. She also kept in touch with her Canadian and NZ family as witnessed by a number of photos. Her cousin, R. D. Finlayson, who visited San Francisco in 1957 was in possession of several photos of Betsy although it is not believed that he visited The Dalles. He could have obtained them when he made contact with Betsy's daughter, Myrtle, while in San Francisco. Elizabeth was a member of First Methodist chirch in The Dalles, Old Wasco County Pioneer assoc and the Columbia Chapter 33 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She passed away at the age of 96.
